  • Soil microbial ecology, microbial biogeography, functional genomics, grassland community ecology, and global change biology.

I focus on the studies of the generation, maintenance, and consequences of microbial biodiversity. Currently I am investigating the mechanisms underlying microbial diversity patterns and the consequences of this diversity for ecosystem functioning, particularly in the face of global change. I use a combination of approaches, from genetic surveys of natural communities to long-term field experiments. I study a variety of systems including grassland bacteria and fungi.
